Western Harbour consultation by Historic England

Background

Historic England is carrying out a review of the listed building and scheduled monument designations in and around Cumberland Basin and Underfall Yard in Bristol at the request of Bristol City Council. The review will consolidate the existing designations and consider some non-designated historic assets in the area for listing prior to the preparation of the Western Harbour Masterplan by Bristol City Council. There has been a period of public consultation.

Response by Bristol Civic Society

The Civic Society welcomes this consultation by Historic England. The review of listing and scheduling in Western Harbour represents a very sound way forward in terms of the future master planning of the area. By identifying the important historic assets within the area, the review enables the proper protection of historic assets in the future.

The Civic Society welcomes the recognition being proposed for the Electricity Power House, long neglected and overlooked, and also for the Cumberland Basin Road scheme – Plimsoll Bridge and Control Tower.

The Civic Society supports all the other proposals in the area, many of which provide interesting additional detail to the current descriptions.
