There will be an unveiling of a Bristol Civic Society blue plaque at 12 noon on 30th July at The Downs Cafe, Stoke Road, Durdham Downs, Bristol BS9 1FG (by the water tower).
The plaque commemorates Bristol aviator Leslie MacDonald (1890 – 1913) – a former Bristol Cathedral School pupil – who was the first to fly a Bristol-built Bristol Boxkite aeroplane over Durdham Down, on Friday November 11, 1910.
The Lord-Lieutenant for the County and City of Bristol, Peaches Golding OBE, CstJ and the Right Honourable Deputy Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Henry Michallat are guests of honour. Joining them will be senior representatives from Filton-based aerospace companies as well as delegates from local and Australian aviation organisations.
The aeroplane was built at the Filton works set up by Sir George White. His great-grandson – the current baronet, Sir George White – will unveil the plaque.
Members of Bristol Civic Society are welcome to come and watch the unveiling. After the formal ceremony, refreshments can be bought from the Cafe.
