Once again join popular author and historian Mark Steeds from the Bristol Radical History Group, this time for a dazzling walk delving into Bristol’s pirating and privateering past.
Mark’s walk is jam-packed with swashbuckling tales of daring-do and incorporates the route of Bristol’s dockside Treasure Island Trail from King Street to Merchants Landing.
It features Bristol pirates both real and fictional, from William de Morrisco and Henry Morgan to Blackbeard and Long John Silver, and privateers such as buccaneering botanist William Dampier and Woodes Rogers, captain of The Duke.
Classic novels featured include Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Tobias Smollet, Charles Kingsley and Bristol’s Romantic Poets are among others getting a look in.
Bristol Radical History Group was formed in 2006 with aims which include opening up some of the ‘hidden’ history of Bristol and the West Country to public scrutiny and challenging some commonly held ideas about historical events.
The walk, which starts at 10am, begins and ends outside the front entrance of M Shed. It will last around 90 minutes and tickets cost £5. There are 30 places available. Members will be invited by email to buy a ticket.
