The Spanish Influenza at the end of the First World War was, it’s usually claimed, more deadly than the war itself. No-one knows for sure how many people it killed world-wide. We do, though, have a pretty good idea of what it did to Bristol and other towns and cities across the UK.
Eugene Byrne, editor of the Bristol Post’s weekly ‘Bristol Times’ pull-out, and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of the West of England, tells us about how it hit Bristol, what was done about it, and hazards a rough guess as to how many Bristolians it killed. Hint: it was probably worse than the Blitz.
