Empire Sports

empire sportsThe former Empire Sports Club, Newfoundland Road
The PG Group plan to apply for planning permission to build a terrace of ten houses on the former car park of the Empire Sports Club, which will face onto Newfoundland Road. At the same time the developer will apply for outline planning permission to restore and redevelop the Grade II listed Club building that was formerly the St. Agnes Church Hall to provide a mixture of flats to include starter homes.

The Society supports the new terrace of ten houses, which will re-create the line of houses that formerly stood on the car park. The new houses will be low energy homes, insulated with straw bale, incorporating solar power and rainwater harvesting. The imaginative design and of materials will complement the recent development of the nearby Junction 3 site. The Society regrets the loss of the public use of the former Church Hall but the PG Group say that there has been no market interest in the continued use of the building. The building has an accumulation of poor maintenance and the developer says that only conversion to residential use would provide the money to repair the building. The Society can say no more about the conversion until the developer publishes its plans.
