Relive the Bristol Blitz: 9th June 2026

Step back in time with artist and local history expert Duncan McKellar on a visit to one of Bristol’s most intriguing wartime sites. Hidden beneath the streets of Bristol lies a fascinating reminder of the city’s wartime ordeal.  Practically untouched since World War Two, the air raid shelter beneath Bristol’s Corn Exchange is a direct link with the past. Duncan McKellar’s tour will begin on Corn Street with a look at photographs of buildings lost on the first night of the Bristol Blitz (24 November 1940), before heading underground to explore the air raid shelter.

For members interested in the history of The Corn Exchange and its design, Duncan has a wealth of knowledge to share. As a member of the Market Traders Steering Group, he can also provide an insight into the current status of St Nicholas Market as well as an overview of traders’ perspectives.

Duncan McKellar’s air raid shelter tour is on Tuesday, June 9, starting at 10.30am from the main entrance of The Corn Exchange  on Corn Street. It will last around 75 minutes. There are just 30 places and tickets cost £5. Members will be invited by email to book a place.
