An illustrated talk by Kerris Harrop, based on ‘Ladies’ Mile‘, a compelling memoir by Victoria Hughes, which Kerris has just had re-published, with the aid of a crowd-funding campaign.
Victoria Hughes spent 33 years as the cloakroom attendant at the public toilets on Bristol’s Durdham Downs. Far more than a job, her position gave her a unique vantage point on the lives of the women who passed through – their hardships, secrets, and struggles – all faithfully recorded in her journals.
The talk will explore Victoria’s life and legacy, the hidden social history of Bristol from the 1930s to the 1960s, and why this extraordinary book was nearly lost — and what led Kerris to reprint it.
Copies of the book will be on sale on the night (£7.50- all proceeds going towards the restoration of the toilet block)
The talk will take place in the Large Meeting Room of the Friends’ Meeting House, Redland, BS6 6JE on Wednesday 29th October beginning at 7.30pm.
Members will be invited by email to join the event.
