There will be an unveiling of a Bristol Civic Society blue plaque on Wednesday 14th January at 11.30am at Harvey’s Lane, off Summerhill Road, St George, Bristol BS5 8HP.
The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Henry Michallat, is guest of honour.
The plaque commemorates Elizabeth Holmes, née Emra, the local vicar’s daughter, who wrote Scenes in our Parish, a description of her neighbourhood, the parish of St George. Her book provides a valuable detailed description of what life was like for those living here in 1830. Its message endures as it is still in print. You can find out more about Elizabeth here.
A full report of the event will be published on our website website and in the next edition of Better Bristol.
After the unveiling, there will be an informal gathering at The Orchard Coffee & Co, 20 Clouds Hill Road/Cherry Orchard Lane, St George, BS5 7LA where tea, coffee and pastries can be bought.
Parking is available on The Avenue and other roads adjacent to Harvey’s Lane. Bus services 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45 pass nearby; alight at the first stop after the St George Fountain junction (A431/A420).
