Spring is finally here, so why not stretch those legs and enjoy our historic harbour in the company of Bristol Civic Society’s very own and well-informed Ed Hall (of colourful shirts fame). Between 1804 and 1808, Bristol City Docks on the tidal River Avon was converted to the ‘Floating Harbour’. This involved damming the river and digging out the Cumberland Basin to provide access locks. The ‘New Cut’ was dug to allow the tides to bypass the docks.
Ed will show – and talk us through – many of these historic features, including the dam, the Underfall Yard, the locks, the bridges, the bonded warehouses and the start of the New Cut. It’s sure to be an enjoyable and enlightening experience!
Please meet outside the Cottage Inn pub (BS1 6XG) 10 minutes before the departure time. The cost of each walk is £3 per person.
Members will be invited by email to book a place.
