About Us
Bristol has distinctive features that make it special to us: for instance, its waterways, harbour, green spaces, hills, position, maritime history, industrial history, and the buildings, streets, spaces, and architectural history. We wish Bristol to live up to its status as a regional capital, reflected in its cityscape, cultural activities and economic life, to be a place its citizens are proud of, and a place that people want to visit, especially through its buildings, facilities and public spaces.
Bristol Civic Society is an independent, voluntary organisation that exists to improve Bristol’s built environment and celebrate its heritage.
Through our working groups, we seek the development of major sites, and new planning and transport policy. We put on a varied events programme, and publish a magazine, e-bulletin and this website.
We are an active and friendly organisation with members from all walks of life. We have existed as a society for over 100 years and new group members are always most welcome.
Our vision is for a city full of activity, diversity and beauty, attractive for living in, work and leisure. A place its citizens are proud of, and a place that people want to visit, especially through its buildings, facilities and public spaces.
We both take pride in our 100+ years’ history, and engage with the here and now. We both promote what is good, for example through our annual Environmental Awards, and through our Working Groups we work for what could be better.
We run a lively programme of events, open to our 500+ members. We communicate through a quarterly newsletter, a topical e-bulletin, and through this website.
We work with others. We are a member of the Bristol Neighbourhood Planning Network – a network of planning and amenity groups across Bristol. And we are one of the organisations in the Transport for Greater Bristol Alliance. In June, 2010 we joined Civic Voice.
